Afghan girls poisoned by school's water supply.

Almost 200 adults and children (all female) have been poisoned at a school in Afghanistan it has emerged this week. Radical Islamist groups are being held responsible for the contamination of the school's water supply, which resulted in a number of symptoms including nausea and vomiting. The poisonings were allegedly carried out as part of a campaign against the education of women.

Radical Islamist insurgents are being held responsible for the contamination of the school's water supply, which resulted in a number of symptoms including nausea, vomiting and loss of consciouness. The poisonings, according to CNN, were allegedly carried out as part of a campaign against the education of women.

Nerve agent found in scrap yard?

We have had our attention directed towards a news story today that a capsule of nerve agent has been found at a Scrap yard in Russia. Russian security services confirmed on Monday media reports that a capsule believed to contain the extremely toxic nerve agent sarin had been discovered in the country’s western Bryansk region.

Media reports published over the weekend quoted sources in local ecological organizations as saying that a group of Bryansk residents had brought a capsule with an inscription “Sarin” on it to a local scrap metal recycling shop on April 7. The capsule was reportedly placed in a sealed box. “The item has been seized by police, the situation is under control,” a spokesman for the Bryansk regional security services said. Tests are under way to establish whether the capsule in fact contains the toxic chemical, he said. He refused to speculate where the capsule could originate from. The Bryansk region hosts a chemical weapons destruction facility near the town of Pochepa, where aviation chemical bombs filled with organophosphorus toxins, including sarin, have been stored.

DHS Handheld Radiation Detection/Identification System requirements to 2017

DHSs DNDO has released a special notice detailing a sole source procuremtn from Smiths Detection, Inc. in fiscal year (FY) 2012 at an estimated value of $3.35M. It has further noted an intention to procure on a competitive basis, a basic handheld radiation detection/identification system to meet DHS's operational components' needs in FYs 2013 through 2017. DNDO intends to issue a solicitation on a full and open competition basis to procure these systems. The government expects the solicitation to be released via FEDBIZOPPS in the summer of 2012 and is not seeking proposals from industry at this time. Additional information regarding the competitive procurement is provided below.

Call for papers for CBRNe Convergence 2012

The Fifth Annual CBRNe Convergence conference will be held in 2012, 30th October – 2 November at the Waterside Marriott, Norfolk, Virginia. 2010’s CBRNe Convergence was the largest CBRNE responder’s conference in the US that year, bringing together 650 delegates with 75 exhibitors and culminating in a massive exercise involving units from the FBI, CST and local responders. 2012 will be no different with an expected 1,000 attendees and 100 exhibitors it promises to be the biggest responder driven event on the East Coast.

This year’s event already has the FBI WMD Directorate and Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response confirmed as supporting partner organizations, and NATO’s Allied Command for Transformation has also committed to being a major participant.

Former University of Texas student arrested with ricin strains

A former University of Texas student, Karl Jasheway, is now the subject of an ongoing investigation by the FBI, having been caught stealing vials of the biotoxin ricin from a UT laboratory. Jasheway, 26, whose research focused on antidotes to the fatal toxin, was first arrested on December 1st 2011 on suspicion of drink-driving. A number of chemical substances were found in his car and, later, in his home.
