Sonoma County health officials have warned local drug addiction service providers of a spike in fatal overdoses that includes a dozen people dying in a recent two-week span.

Chris Geiger, acting vice president of Center Point DAAC, a large nonprofit that provides various drug addiction services, said “It’s a disturbing trend — double the numbers, that should be a clarion call,” adding that fentanyl is the leading cause of death among people under 50. The uptick in deaths is being attirbuted to fentanyl and carfentanil — the latter being 10,000 times more potent than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl.
