M3TD awards signal US progress in advanced chemical detection research

The US has recently awarded 18 contracts for advanced chemical detection research as part of M3RD. An incredible sized programme given the suggestion at the APBTI that around 8 awards would be made. More information on the technologies and winners in the main article.

Well the widely rumoured to be main effort left in advancing detection technologies in the US the Multi-Mission Multi-Threat Detection (M3TD) program has finally made its awards. The program is deeply secure and US Eyes only, with a focus looking at providing a system that covers the full range of traditional Chemical and Non Traditional Agents. Some further understanding can be gained from the briefing of the whole programme here

The response to the call was overwhelming, with a series of main technology categories such as IMS and IR, and one catch all 'other' for overlooked technologies. Money was directed as follows:

Ion Mobility Spectrometer - 5 projects awarded
Raman - 4 projects awarded
Mass spectrometer - 4 projects awarded
IR - 2 projects known to be awarded
Other - 3 project awarded

No real surprises at the focus on IMS, Raman and MS, but really good to see the high number of projects awarded to other technologies. This shows, hopefully, an open mind to new technologies and solutions. The companies winning the money are also not a huge surprise, other than Thales Defence and Security Inc. Thales, well known for its work in CBRN systems within Europe has never had much sucess in CBRN beyond Europe despite its international footprint. This explosion in to the sensor arena, in a hotly contested call, is fascinating though we may never know what they, or the other companies are offering.
