Bhopal victims stage protest on eve of the Olympics

27/07/2012 - According to the Khaleej Times, over 100 disabled children staged a protest yesterday aimed at Dow Chemical, a sponsor of the London Olympic Games and company associated with the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster - by way of their 2001 purchase of Union Carbide.

The protest took the form of a 'Bhopal Special Olympics'. Disabled sports activities were staged close to the Union Carbide factory as both a memorial to the thousands who died in the disaster and a protest against those behind it. Dow Chemical's sponsorship of the Games is seen by many, particularly Bhopal locals, as a public endorsement of a company still held responsible for the disproportionate number of disabled children born within the vicinity of the factory today.
