The French Nuclear Safety and Radiation Protection Authority (ASNR) plays a central role in evaluating radiological risks and coordinating specialised response resources, including mobile laboratories and field teams equipped with radiation detection technologies.
While conventional monitoring systems remain critical for emergency operations, they can present operational challenges when assessing children, injured individuals, or people with reduced mobility. These situations require flexible and accessible solutions capable of delivering reliable measurements directly at the point of care while meeting the stringent radiological protection standards established by ASNR.
To address this need, NUVIATech Instruments, in collaboration with ASNR, has developed SYALMA, a patented and innovative anthroporadiometric monitoring system designed for rapid thyroid and whole-body gamma contamination measurements in emergency situations.
SYALMA has been engineered to improve field operations through a lightweight, autonomous, and highly portable design. The system can be easily deployed close to affected populations, allowing emergency teams to perform contamination assessments without relying exclusively on fixed monitoring infrastructures. Its adaptable configuration makes it particularly suitable for children, injured casualties, and individuals with limited mobility.
By enabling fast and reliable exposure assessments, SYALMA supports more efficient victim triage and management, helping emergency responders make informed decisions when time is critical. The system also reinforces crisis-response capabilities through the coordination of multiple monitoring units from a single command centre, improving operational oversight and resource deployment.
As part of a joint initiative to advance next-generation radiological emergency response capabilities, NUVIATech Instruments has supported the deployment of the first ten SYALMA units within ASNR crisis-management teams.
