ATMAS Group Oy, a Helsinki-based developer and global supplier of civil defence shelter protection and CBRN filtration systems, today announced a strategic partnership with Joel Naukkarinen — four-time World Indoor Rowing Champion, ten-time World Championship medalist, and Finnish Olympic contender. At the heart of the collaboration is the ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber System: a compact, high-performance carbon dioxide removal technology originally engineered for civil defence shelter environments, now deployed to optimize the air quality conditions in which Naukkarinen trains, recovers, and sleeps as he prepares for the Olympic Games.

The ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber System was designed to solve one of the most demanding challenges in civil defence engineering: maintaining breathable, performance-grade air quality inside sealed shelter environments without reliance on continuous external ventilation. In blast-protected or NBC-sealed shelters, managing CO₂ build-up is a critical life-safety requirement — and ATMAS engineered a system compact, reliable, and efficient enough to meet it.

That same technology — refined for compactness and energy efficiency — is now applied to a new kind of high-performance environment: the training and recovery spaces of one of Scandinavia’s elite athletes. The partnership with Naukkarinen represents the first deployment of the ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber in an elite sport context, and a compelling proof of the system’s versatility beyond its original civil defence application.

Typical indoor environments accumulate CO₂ concentrations of 1,500–2,500 ppm — levels well above the performance-optimal threshold. Research consistently links elevated CO₂ to reduced cognitive sharpness, degraded sleep quality, and slower physiological recovery: precisely the factors that separate gold-medal performance from silver. The ATMAS Shelter CO₂ Scrubber actively reduces indoor CO₂ to approximately 700 ppm —
a level associated with optimal cognitive function and recovery efficiency. For Naukkarinen, whose Training Center Concept (TCC) is built on the premise that elite performance is won as much in recovery as on the water, this level of environmental control is a decisive competitive advantage.
