Accelerating TOXRail

C3 Applied Tech (C3AT) has been awarded a Commercialization Grant from the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) Consortium to accelerate the development and integration of its TOXRail sensor onto Recon Robotics’ ThrowBot® 3 (TB3). TOXRail is a multi-gas detector with gamma radiation detection, and the grant will help C3AT move the combined system from prototype toward operational readiness.

The grant program provides non-dilutive funding to consortium members to speed commercialization of technologies important to warfighter and first responder missions. With $200,000 available, and awards of up to $50,000 each, the grant supports technical development, expanded testing, and critical third-party validation, resources that are often difficult for small companies to secure.

Integrating TOXRail with the TB3 delivers several operational advantages. Firstly, it enhances safety by letting CBRN professionals assess hazardous environments remotely before personnel enter. Secondly, the TB3’s compact, rugged design, suitable for breaching and Sensitive Site Exploitation, enables flexible deployment: the unit can be tossed, launched from a larger UGV, or carried by a UAV. Finally, TOXRail’s modular architecture paves the way for lightweight, low-power variants that can be adapted for other unmanned platforms or standalone deployable sensor roles.

C3AT says the CWMD grant will be especially valuable for funding third-party testing and validation, a key hurdle for small companies seeking adoption. The company plans to showcase the integrated TOXRail–TB3 capability at SCOUT (CBOA), March 21–27, at Camp Dawson, West Virginia, underscoring the project’s rapid path from innovation to field demonstration.

C3 Applied Tech partners with public- and private-sector organizations to solve development and integration challenges when in-house expertise or resources are limited, focusing on rapid prototyping and field-ready sensor solutions.
