# Train hazmat

 Written on 30 December 2025.

A derailed CSX train leaked a flammable chemical and sparked a fire in a rural part of southern Kentucky in late December, prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. 31 railcars derailed according to a statement from CSX; a leak of molten sulfur emanated from one rail car and sparked a fire that was extinguished by the following morning. Thankfully no injuries were reported and crews at the scene were working “as safely and quickly as possible" to clean up the site the statement said. Molten sulfur can be toxic when it is on fire, but air quality testing at the derailment site indicated that the air was clear and the shelter-in-place order was lifted.
