#  First human rabies case in 40 years

The Zacatecas Health Secretariat reported a human case of rabies in a 17-year-old female patient. On August 13, 2025, the patient was treated at hospital after being bitten on the upper left limb by a wild skunk in late June.

According to reports the young lady didnt immediatly seek medical care for the bite and treated the would with hydrogen peroxide and home remedies. It wasn’t until she showed symptoms of human rabies that she sought out medical treatment. The patient remains hospitalized in serious condition.

Authorities have begun interviews with relatives and close contacts to assess the need for post-exposure prophylaxis and have conducted visits to communities connected to the patient’s movements and treatment. These steps are intended to establish a detailed chronology, prevent further cases, and support active surveillance of potential infections.
