The European leading robotics and autonomous systems developer Milrem Robotics will launch a newly developed autonomous Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) unmanned ground system THeMIS Observe that will be showcased during the fourth iMUGS project demonstration in Belgium.

“A UGV based ISR system significantly increases a tactical unit’s reaction speed on targets as well as the stand-off distance from enemy units,” explained Cpt (res) Jüri Pajuste, Defence Research Director at Milrem Robotics. “Thanks to that the capability and survivability of tactical reconnaissance units will increase considerably,” Pajuste said, adding that this type of capability is usually not available on one platform for light infantry units.

The THeMIS Observe is based on Milrem Robotics’ THeMIS UGV and integrated with ISR equipment from various leaders in their fields. The system includes the Z:Sparrowhawk camera from HENSOLDT, the Squire radar by Thales, Metravib Defence Pearl acoustic shot detection and the ROSY (Rapid Obscuring System) by Rheinmetall. The system can also be equipped with a light remote weapon station.

“The combination of those systems allows units to do multi-sensor identification on one platform and react faster on emerging targets,” Pajuste added.

Additionally, the THeMIS Observe is equipped with Milrem’s Intelligent Functions Kit that enables autonomous functions such as follow-me, waypoint navigation with obstacle detection and avoidance.

The THeMIS Observe will be demonstrated during the European Commission’s European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) funded iMUGS project’s fourth demonstration in Belgium in June. The iMUGS project aims to develop a European standardized unmanned ground system (EUGS). During the project, modular and scalable architecture for hybrid manned-unmanned systems will be developed to standardize a European wide ecosystem.

The system will also be on display at Eurosatory on Milrem Robotics’ stand in Hall 6 K 253.

Kromek, a leading developer of radiation and bio-detection technology solutions for the advanced imaging and CBRN detection segments, announces that it has received an order from a US federal entity for the Group’s D3S-ID wearable nuclear radiation detector. The order is worth $695,000 and is to be delivered in the coming months. This is a repeat order for the D3S-ID from this customer, following the award of a $1.6m two-year contract in September 2021.

The D3S-ID is designed to enable first responders, armed forces, border security and other CBRN experts to detect radiological threats such as [dirty bombs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_bomb), radioactive contamination and [smuggling of radioactive substances](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimes_involving_radioactive_substances). It is a wearable gamma neutron RIID (radioisotope identification device) that the Group believes is one of the fastest and most accurate isotope identification devices in its class on the market. Kromek’s D3S platform – comprising the Group’s range of D3S products – is widely deployed as a networked solution to protect cities, buildings, or critical infrastructure.

Dr Arnab Basu, CEO of Kromek, said: “We’re pleased to have received this latest order for our D3S-ID nuclear radiation detector that provides security authorities with an early warning system for potential threats. Being awarded a repeat order for this product from this important customer is a great endorsement. With the volatility of the current geopolitical environment, we are receiving heightened demand for our CBRN solutions, from new and existing customers, as governments become increasingly aware of the need to enhance their real-time threat monitoring. We believe that our solutions are best placed to provide them with this capability and, accordingly, we expect to receive further orders for our nuclear security products in the near term.”

Homeland security company [RedWave Technology](https://redwavetech.com) is introducing the XplorIR, the most innovative gas-identification system specifically developed for today’s emergency response missions.

The XplorIR can identify over 5,500 gases at low part per million (ppm) concentrations. It is the first handheld FTIR identification tool with this breadth and sensitivity. The lightweight device can be used on scene, measuring the gas at its source. The XplorIR can identify many dangerous gases, including toxic industrial compounds (TICs), flammables, corrosives, industrial gases, and many other chemicals at operationally relevant levels.

Jon Frattaroli, CEO of RedWave Technology stated, “Teams around the country told us that they needed technology that could quickly and accurately identify a wide range of toxic gases. This capability gap directly affects their ability to quickly mitigate threats. We undertook the development of the XplorIR with the simple focus of creating a chemical analyzer that could keep responders and their communities safer from dangerous gases.”

While teams have many tools to detect an unknown gas, there is no compelling technology that allows responders to quickly identify a gas with a high level of accuracy. With the XplorIR, emergency response teams can quickly identify exactly what gas they are encountering so they can develop a mitigation plan.

John Seelenbinder, Director of Product Development at Redwave added, “The core technology behind the XplorIR is FTIR spectroscopy; it has been used for more than 20 years in homeland security applications. Advancements in both optical design and computational algorithms provide unprecedented performance, allowing operation in the most rigorous conditions. The XplorIR was designed for emergency responders with significant input from emergency response teams around the country.”

 Seelenbinder explained that emergency response teams never know what they are going to encounter and they need to be prepared for an unbelievably wide range of threats, whether it’s common industrial gas or even a large-scale terrorist event.

"Identification of the dangers present is a fundamental need in emergency response. The XplorIR now allows chemical identification of gases with a speed and simplicity never before achievable,” Frattaroli said.

RedWave Technology also builds the ThreatID, a portable chemical threat identifier that can identify thousands of gas, powder, and liquid threats all in one device. It has been the fastest-growing FTIR-based threat identifier for the past three years.

Countries should also update their contact tracing mechanisms, the diagnostic capacity for orthopoxviruses, and review the availability of smallpox vaccines, antivirals and personal protective equipment for health professionals.

Between 15 and 23 May, a total of 85 cases of monkeypox acquired in the EU have been reported in eight EU Member States (Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden). The currently diagnosed human monkeypox cases are primarily among men who have sex with men, which suggests that transmission may take place during intimate relations. Transmission may occur through close contact of mucosa or non-intact skin with infectious material from the lesions, or through large respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face contact.

“Most of the current cases have presented with mild disease symptoms, and for the broader population, the likelihood of spread is very low,” said Andrea Ammon, ECDC Director. “However, the likelihood of further spread of the virus through close contact, for example during sexual activities among persons with multiple sexual partners, is considered to be high.”

Stella Kyriakides, European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, added “I am concerned about the increased number of reported monkeypox cases in the EU and globally. We are closely monitoring the situation, and whilst currently the likelihood of spread in the broader population is low, the situation is evolving. We all need to remain vigilant, ensure that contact tracing and adequate diagnostics capacity is in place, and ensure that we have the necessary vaccines, antivirals and personal protective equipment for health professionals available. We have been in close contact with Member States since the first reports of cases of the monkeypox virus in the EU and stand ready to actively support and coordinate the EU response with all assets at the EU’s disposal. The EU Health Security Committee will discuss monkeypox tomorrow, and our Health Emergency Response and Preparedness Authority (HERA), ECDC and EMA are working closely together to ensure that information on the epidemiological situation and the availability of vaccines and treatments is ensured.”

The monkeypox virus can cause severe disease in certain population groups, such as young children, pregnant women and immunosuppressed persons. Further investigations are needed to accurately estimate the level of morbidity and mortality in this outbreak.

If human-to-animal transmission occurs, and the virus spreads in an animal population, there is a risk that the disease could become endemic in Europe. As such, there needs to be a close intersectoral collaboration between human and veterinary public health authorities to manage exposed pets and prevent the disease from being transmitted to wildlife.

Infected persons should remain isolated until scabs fall off and should especially avoid close contact with immunosuppressed persons and pets. Abstaining from sexual activity and close physical contact is also advised until the rash heals. Most cases can remain at home with supportive care.

Close contacts of monkeypox cases should self-monitor for the development of symptoms for 21 days after the last exposure. ECDC will continue to monitor developments closely and will update the risk assessment as new data and information become available.

Allen-Vanguard, a global leader in providing customized solutions for defeating Radio Frequency based terrorist and extremist threats, has delivered Explosive Threat Reduction Team (ETRT) training courses to Somalia security forces personnel. The innovative courses are designed to enhance Somalia’s indigenous capability to detect and destroy Explosive Ordnance (EO) and conduct Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD).

The consortium consisting of Allen-Vanguard (prime contractor), SKA International (logistics) and Artios Global Ltd (training) has delivered two ETRT courses to the Somali National Army and Somali Police Force to create the capacity for them to detect and destroy items of EO and safely mitigate the IEDD threat.

The course design followed international best practice for training and learning, employed a detailed training management plan and met the necessary high-level training objectives to ensure full compliance with United Nations Mine Action Services (UNMAS) IEDD standards; they also aligned with potential future UNMAS IEDD training requirements. The comprehensive training package included detailed theory, individual foundation skills, integrated team training, scenario-based exercises and summative assessments. So far, numerous Somali security force personnel have successfully passed the training, creating sufficient capability to generate multiple ETRTs; each with specialists trained in specific roles for search (detect) and explosive ordnance disposal (destroy) culminating in an operational capability that will be put to great use.

Bobby Strawbridge, Director Business Development said “our consortia are delighted with the outcome of this ground-breaking capability development within the Somali Security Forces. Through a number of channels, we have been working closely with Somalia Security Forces for some time to help detect, protect and defeat the considerable explosive threats they face. The course was exceptionally well received both by the Somali security personnel and the international military personnel overseeing the training. Cam Baldry, the Artios PM leading the delivery summarized the training with “the Somali security forces are fully aware of the security environment they face and were eager to learn and adopt this new capability. They were extremely well motivated and keen to learn. We were impressed at their professionalism and diligence and are confident that they’ll implement these new skills and techniques to great operational effect”.

Chimerix, a biopharmaceutical company whose mission it is to develop medicines that meaningfully improve and extend the lives of patients facing deadly diseases, today announces it has entered into a definitive agreement with Emergent BioSolutions Inc. (Emergent) to acquire its exclusive worldwide rights to brincidofovir, including TEMBEXA. TEMBEXA is a medical countermeasure for smallpox approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2021.

“Emergent is an ideal partner to maximize the long-term potential of TEMBEXA to ensure pandemic preparedness in the event of a smallpox recurrence,” said Mike Sherman, Chief Executive Officer of Chimerix. “This transaction significantly enhances Chimerix’s balance sheet and allows us to focus and invest in our development pipeline. We also continue to participate in the longer-term economics of TEMBEXA through US milestones and double-digit royalties from US and international revenues.”

Terms of the agreement with Emergent anticipate a TEMBEXA procurement contract with Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). Chimerix is currently in negotiations with BARDA for a procurement contract relating to TEMBEXA and will continue to lead the process through its conclusion.

Under the terms of the agreement with Emergent, Chimerix will receive $225 million upon closing of the transaction plus up to $100 million in up to four $25 million milestone payments. Each milestone payment is contingent upon the exercise of future BARDA procurement options of TEMBEXA following the base period. The closing payment and the milestone payments may be adjusted based on actual procurement value. Chimerix is also eligible to receive up to $12.5 million in regulatory milestones associated with the SymBio Pharmaceuticals Ltd. brincidofovir partnership to be assumed by Emergent.

Chimerix may also earn a 20% royalty on future gross profit of TEMBEXA in the United States associated with volumes above 1.7 million treatment courses of therapy during the exclusivity period of TEMBEXA. Outside of the United States, the agreement also allows Chimerix to earn a 15% royalty on all gross profit associated with TEMBEXA sales during the exclusivity period of TEMBEXA on a market-to-market basis.

SIGA Technologies, Inc. (SIGA), a commercial-stage pharmaceutical company focused on the health security market, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the intravenous (IV) formulation of TPOXX for the treatment of smallpox. The IV formulation is an important option for those who are unable to swallow the oral capsules of TPOXX.

“We are grateful to the FDA for their work leading to approval of IV TPOXX, which will provide access to a broader patient population,” said Dr. Dennis Hruby, CSO of SIGA. “We are also appreciative to our colleagues at BARDA who have been working with us for many years to include oral and IV TPOXX in U.S. preparedness efforts and look forward to continuing to work with them on our liquid pediatric formulation.”

The oral formulation of TPOXX (tecovirimat) is approved in the US, Canada and Europe for the treatment of smallpox. The European approval also includes the treatment of monkeypox, cowpox, and complications from immunization with vaccinia. The IV formulation of TPOXX was cited in the recent U.S. president’s budget request as being used to treat a patient in the U.S. with monkeypox

Soldiers from The [Queen’s Royal Hussars](https://www.army.mod.uk/who-we-are/corps-regiments-and-units/royal-armoured-corps/queens-royal-hussars/) (QRH) have carried out counter Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) training at the [Defence Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Centre](https://www.army.mod.uk/who-we-are/our-schools-and-colleges/defence-cbrn-centre/) (DCBRNC) near Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire.

D Squadron, QRH, also based in Wiltshire, are the most senior armoured regiment in the British Army and the Squadron, also known as the ‘Black Pig’ Squadron, lent their name to the training entitled Exercise Toxic Pig. This type of training is the first to be undertaken by a non-specialist Army unit since the early days of the conflict in Iraq.

For us it’s not only about being experts in Mounted Close Combat but also being experts in any environment we might face which not only increases our individual and collective readiness to deploy but makes us more survivable when we do.MAJOR STEVEN BEE. QUEEN'S ROYAL HUSSARS.

Personnel who are also part of the UK’s Resilience Unit, were trained in disciplines ranging from chemical survey and reconnaissance through to personnel and vehicle decontamination drills ensuring that D Squadron are the most highly trained generalist unit in the British Army.

In realistic environments specially prepared at the Centre, over 30 soldiers took part in various scenarios such as the dealing with the toxic industrial hazards (rather than more conventional weaponised chemical agents) that could be posed from a plane or train crash or road traffic accident. They also had to assess the risks and take decisive action to deal with more conventional threats as well as encountering clandestine chemical laboratories.

This training will further enable the Squadron to deploy at speed and be ready and able to operate in all environments anywhere in the world.

**Major Steven Bee**, Officer Commanding D Squadron QRH:

“For us it’s not only about being experts in Mounted Close Combat but also being experts in any environment we might face, which not only increases our individual and collective readiness to deploy but makes us more survivable when we do.”

Adds Major Bee:

“D Squadron have learnt how to conduct chemical recces and surveys as well as personnel and vehicle decontamination, we also spent a day with Falcon Squadron, Royal Tank Regiment in Warminster gaining an awareness of more specialist assets. Those taking part have had a range of different situations put before them that they can learn about, take lessons from, and use in the future. Every unit should have protection groups that are able to do all of these tasks.

This training and any future sessions that the QRH plan to undertake means that these soldiers will be able to safeguard people and countries from the effects of chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear accidents or disasters, whether in the context of warfare, a terrorist incident, or other situations.

So, to have a unit that’s up to date on its drills and is approved and recognised at divisional level can only be good. When it comes to tactical training it gives us a good understanding if we were to come across a CBRN threat.SERGEANT KYLE MACREADY. QUEEN'S ROYAL HUSSARS

**Sergeant Kerry Wild** is a member of the Technical Support Group (TSG) at the Defence CBRN Centre. He explains more about what this intensive course involved:

“Clearance of a mock-up shop and post office was one of the scenarios where soldiers were tasked to ensure buildings were clear of any chemical agents, by working their way methodically through the structure using chemical sense equipment.

We also set up a barn where there were known chemical agents contained inside. D Squadron then went into the building to assess, record and pass information on, to enable specialists to go in and deal with any potentially dangerous situations or substances that were discovered.”

 Sergeant Wild adds:

“Everything these soldiers have been put through this week shows that personnel can be effectively trained in this area alongside all the other training they have to undergo. I see that this is going to be an integral part of a soldiers training in the future”

Sergeant Kyle Macready from D Squadron QRH was one of those taking part in the CBRN training:

“It is really important for us to undertake this type of training it is a threat of today both internally and externally. Indoor disaster response and search and rescue can be some of the most dangerous and difficult scenarios for First Responders. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Public Safety Communications Research (PSCR) Division needs your innovative unmanned aircraft system (UAS) solutions to support First Responders by scouting an indoor structure and providing information about its condition and situation awareness prior to entry.

The outcomes of an ideal indoor UAS operation are improving the usability, or flyability, lowering the total cost of the UAS platform, and improving autonomous sensors while operating with limited or no GPS signal.

### The Mission

**To support the first responder community and help save lives.**

Imagine a scenario where First Responders need to conduct a response and rescue effort within an indoor facility. To improve both safety and success, they would benefit from a UAS that could maneuver within a closed space.

During the 5th CBRNE R&amp;I Conerence in Lille we had the opportunity to meet some of the team from Dr.F.Kohler Chemie Pharmaceuticals who had on display a portable test kit for the detection of nerve agents.

Called M.A.I.K - the Mobile Acetylcholinesterase-Inhibitor Test-Kit - it consists of a field portable pouch, consisting of all the compnents needeed to conduct a rapid assesment of surface contmaination e.g. skin, for nerve agents and is based on a simple colour reaction.

M.A.I.Kis a 4-step-measurement, which can be performed easily and quickly. The principle is based on assessing whether human acetylcholinesterase, which is a component of M.A.I.K, is either still active or inhibited after a surface has been sampled.
