DNA Script, a world leader in Enzymatic DNA Synthesis (EDS) for DNA on demand, has announced the first successful qPCR assays using primers and probes synthesized by a customer via enzymatic synthesis using the company’s [SYNTAX System](https://www.dnascript.com/products/syntax/) DNA printer. This success was achieved as part of a contract with the French Defense Innovation Agency, in liaison with the French [Armament General Directorate](https://www.defense.gouv.fr/dga) (DGA), [first announced](https://www.dnascript.com/press-releases/dna-script-signs-innovation-development-contract-with-french-defense-innovation-agency-to-enable-on-demand-diagnostics-against-emerging-biothreats/) in January 2021.

The partnership leverages the SYNTAX System to produce high-quality DNA primers and probes to rapidly develop qPCR assays for infectious disease detection. Based on these results, the collaboration has been extended to further test EDS primers and probes for qPCR assay development, giving the DGA access to new versions of synthesis and labeling technologies that the company commercially develops.

This market’s applications in biodefense are a strategic focus contributing to the sovereign production of biological assays for the French Ministry for the Armed Forces.

“This extension validates the importance of our SYNTAX benchtop DNA printing system for rapid response programs,” said Thomas Ybert, CEO and co-founder of DNA Script. “We have demonstrated that SYNTAX can consistently print high-quality DNA probes for mobile and onsite deployment, enabling same-day qPCR from design to results, which is an enormous advantage for any pathogen early warning system.”

The ultimate goal is to create a platform that can quickly develop new assays targeting biological threats or emerging pathogens during an outbreak’s earliest phases.

“COVID has taught us that we need to be prepared for new threats,” said Ybert. “Our work with the DGA takes that preparation to the next level, providing the ability to respond faster to new biothreats.”

The SYNTAX System delivers a DNA printing technology that is compliant with the DGA’s requirements. The system relies on enzymatic synthesis, a safer, more sustainable technology that does not rely on toxic reagents or produce the hazardous organic waste associated with phosphoramidite chemistry DNA printing.

The SYNTAX printer synthesizes high-quality, custom nucleic acids for immediate use within hours. As a result, researchers developing new assays can save days, sometimes even weeks, by printing in-house versus waiting for oligos to be delivered from third-party service providers. This capability is critically important for programs focused on improving the response time to emerging biological risks and biothreats.

Around 13 people are dead, and more than 250 have been injured, by an incident involving a chlorine tank at Aqaba port in Jordan.

A tank containing 25 metric tons of chlorine was being exported to Djibouti when a crane malfunction caused it to fall. The tank slammed into the deck of the ship and exploded, sending a cloud of bright yellow gas in all directions. Video footage from the port shows the incident as it happened, with dock workers scattering for safety.

Health and safety officials have advised citizens to close their windows and remain inside. The Civil Defence service announced on its Facebook page that specialised teams have been scrambled to deal with the gas, and planes were being sent to evacuate people from Aqaba.

Teledyne FLIR, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, today announced the release of Prism AI, a software framework that provides classification, object detection, and object tracking, enabling perception engineers to quickly start integrating thermal cameras for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle (AV) systems. Built for automotive perception system developers, Prism includes features such as visible-and-thermal image fusion and advanced thermal image processing capabilities that provide superior pedestrian and animal detection in challenging lighting conditions. This feature is especially effective at night, which is when more than [79 percent of pedestrian deaths](https://www.ghsa.org/resources/Pedestrians22) occurred in 2020.

“The Prism AI software model has performed successfully in [third-party, NCAP automatic emergency braking (AEB) tests](https://www.flir.com/globalassets/industrial/oem/adas/flir-thermal-aeb-white-paper---final-v1.pdf) and will now help perception engineers create more effective systems,” said Michael Walters, vice president product management, Teledyne FLIR. “Combining the Prism AI development tools, plugins, and dataset development offers integrators a route to quickly test and decrease development cost for thermal-enabled ADAS or AV that will help save lives.”

Developers can use Prism AI as the primary perception software or as reference software during in-house development. A suite of Prism AI tools provides simplified data integration with the recently released Teledyne FLIR Conservator™ data lifecycle management software as well as the industry’s largest thermal-and-visible training dataset. Compatible with Teledyne FLIR market-leading thermal cameras including Boson®, Tau® 2, and the FLIR ADK™, Prism AI also includes production-required features including authentication between the thermal camera and the electronic control unit, further simplifying development.

By providing the basis for efficient perception model development, Prism AI can also help lower compute cost for commonly used desktop and embedded processors from NVIDIA, Ambarella, Qualcomm, and more. Paired with the Teledyne FLIR expert technical services team available for integration support, perception engineers from academia to OEMs now have a complete ecosystem to build thermal-enabled ADAS and AV systems.

In the United States, preliminary data from the first half of 2021 from the [Governors Highway Safety Association](https://www.ghsa.org/sites/default/files/2022-04/Pedestrian%20Traffic%20Fatalities%20by%20State%20January%20-%20June%202021%20Preliminary%20Data_0.pdf?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter_axioswhatsnext&stream=science) estimated a 17 percent increase in pedestrian fatalities compared to the previous year and a 46 percent jump from 2011. Argon Electronics (UK) Ltd. has released a major upgrade to its Mirion ADM300A V1b training simulator that provides a significant and welcome improvement to the simulated Gamma and Beta Gamma simulation performance of the training system.

The upgrade implements Argons’ latest generation Gamma simulation technology to deliver advanced simulation of inverse square law response and shielding effects and can be applied to all existing customer ADM 300A V1b simulators. The realism and repeatability of the simulated inverse square law response and the ability to create scenarios where the source is hidden behind a brick wall, inside a vehicle or within solid packaging is especially impressive and provides instructors with significant, advanced exercise creation flexibility.

The associated simulation gamma source employs Argon’s proprietary signalling technology and can be detected by the ADM 300A V1b simulator at distance of typically 60 metres (200 feet) line of sight. All previously supplied legacy gamma survey simulators can be similarly upgraded and all newly released Argon gamma survey simulators will also employ this advanced simulation technology.

ADM300A V1b SIM can also be used with PlumeSIM to respond to scenarios involving wide area radiological releases including ground deposition and hot spot areas.

Twenty-year Defence veteran, Geoff Rowland, is the newly appointed General Manager of UK based OPEC CBRNe. Geoff will arrive in the UK in August to take over the reins.

“With current world events continuing to shape nations and communities, OPEC CBRNe remains in a strong position to engage and service all aspects of the CBRN market,” said Managing Director, Peter Murphy of parent company OPEC Systems.

“We are delighted to bring Geoff into the CBRNe team and know that he will bring his considerable expertise from Defence, along with his talent in Defence remediation and global supply chains to the fore in this role,” Peter said.

The appointment of Mr Rowland coincides with a restructure of OPEC CBRNe to realign capability with achievement of the Land2110 Project for the Australian Defence Force, and completion of the design and testing phase of the OPEC CBRNe Family of Suits.

“The Land2110 project was a resounding success for OPEC CBRNe and involved delivery of tens of thousands of Kestrel CBRN ensembles and other specialised CBRN equipment for the Australian Army,” Peter said.

“This project has now largely concluded and we are delighted that the pedigree Kestrel garment is now on the ground providing important CBRN safety to Australian soldiers.”

With design, technological refinement, integration and testing of the OPEC CBRNe Family of Suits now largely completed, OPEC CBRNe is shifting focus to bring its key ensembles to the market.

The restructure at OPEC CBRNe has seen all technical development capability returned to Australia, whilst the United Kingdom has retained project management and quality assurance capability.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has declared a national incident after routine surveillance of wastewater in north and east [London](https://www.theguardian.com/uk/london) found evidence of community transmission of poliovirus for the first time.

Wastewater at one particular treatment plant tested positive for vaccine-derived poliovirus in back in February during routine tersting. This is not highly unusual, vaccine derived poliovirus is detected 3-4 times a year in the UK. However, the samples detected at this aprticualr plant raised the alarm because they were related to one another, and contained mutations that suggest the virus was evolving as it spreads from person to person. It is believed that the origin of the virus is likely someone who has arrived in the UK after being vaccinted with the oral polio vaccine and spreading it locally.

At present there have been no cases of polio, or the virus related paralysis, reported to authorities. As part of the response to the incident the NHS will be reaching out to parents of unvaccintaed children to advise vaccination, and adults will be encouraged to check they have been vaccianted.

The UK Health Security Agency has announced today it recommends offering the smallpox vaccine Imvanex, which is shown to be effective against monkeypox, to those considered to be at higher risk of exposure.

Anyone can contract monkeypox, but [data from the latest outbreak shows](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/monkeypox-outbreak-vaccination-strategy) higher levels of transmission within – but not exclusive to – the sexual networks of gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.

According to the UKSHA website "The strategy is endorsed by the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), which was consulted on the eligibility criteria for the vaccine. An individual’s eligibility would depend on a number of factors but would be similar to the criteria used to assess those eligible for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) – but applied regardless of HIV status.The strategy states that a clinician may advise vaccination for someone who, for example, has multiple partners, participates in group sex or attends ‘sex on premises’ venues."

NHS England is due to set out details on how eligible people can get vaccinated shortly. People are advised not to come forward for the vaccine until contacted.

Teledyne FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY), announced today at Eurosatory that it is completing deliveries of 127 PackBot® 525 unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to the German Army (Deutsches Heer).

Final shipments are expected to occur in July. Contract award and deliveries were facilitated through Teledyne FLIR’s partner, European Logistic Partners (ELP) of Wuppertal, Germany.

The Teledyne FLIR [PackBot 525](https://www.flir.co.uk/products/packbot-525/) is the most advanced model of the company’s signature ground robot, used by U.S. and international defense forces since 2001. Deployed in combat zones from the caves of Afghanistan to the IED-littered roads of Iraq, the rugged, 27 kg PackBot keeps operators safe while conducting a wide range of tasks, such as bomb disposal, close-in surveillance, and situations involving hostages or hazardous materials.

“This new delivery of unmanned assets will give Germany’s soldiers more than a hundred versatile UGVs, with upgraded features and technology to keep them from harm during dangerous missions,” said Dr. David Cullin, vice president and general manager of Unmanned and Integrated Solutions at Teledyne FLIR Defense. “PackBot is the world’s most trusted counter-IED robot, and this latest shipment adds to the German Army’s inventory of Teledyne FLIR unmanned ground vehicles.

The prototype “particle beam cannon” recently[ completed](https://www.cas.cn/jh/202201/t20220111_4821658.shtml) by Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Modern Physics may sound like science fiction, but it is a novel new technology that promises to recycle dangerous waste produced by a nuclear reactor. A product of China’s huge investment in advanced nuclear-energy systems, the breakthrough could move the country toward energy independence and further cement its global leadership in climate-friendly technology.

In a typical fission reactor, atoms of heavy isotopes such as uranium-235 are broken apart, releasing energy. The process also releases extra neutrons, which collide with other atoms and break them apart in a chain reaction. The broken atoms are [spent fuel](https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/basic-ref/students/science-101/what-is-an-spent-fuel.html) that is cooled for a few years and then carefully stored for a few centuries. But a proposed new type of reactor built with this “cannon”—formally, a proton accelerator—could recycle this spent fuel, making it cheaper and safer to generate electricity.

As envisioned, an accelerator-driven system, or[ ADS](https://world-nuclear.org/information-library/current-and-future-generation/accelerator-driven-nuclear-energy.aspx), consists of[ three parts](https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S187661021101589X): the *proton accelerator* launches protons, the *spallation target* contains the heavy element to be split, and the *sub-critical reactor* contains the fuel which causes fission. The accelerator fires protons at a heavy element (most likely bismuth) surrounded by a blanket of spent fuel and fresh fissile material (most likely thorium-232 or uranium-238). The target splits apart, releasing neutrons that are absorbed by the spent fuel, turning it back into fissile heavy isotopes—that is, fresh nuclear fuel. Importantly, this process is self-terminating, and does not run the risk of a chain reaction or a meltdown. The Institute of Modern Physics’ completion of a prototype accelerator is a big step toward a working ADS, and a prime example of China’s huge investment in advanced nuclear energy systems paying dividends in new innovations.

Unlike numerous governments that have [abandoned nuclear energy](https://www.climatescorecard.org/2021/09/germanys-use-of-nuclear-power-is-ending-soon/?msclkid=30b37570a6d111ec9efab445c0041fb6) entirely, China sees fission as key to a more secure future. Upwards of 70% of China’s petroleum comes from imports, primarily from the[ Middle East](https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=43216), and must transit numerous maritime[ chokepoints](https://bpr.berkeley.edu/2019/08/26/the-malacca-dilemma-a-hindrance-to-chinese-ambitions-in-the-21st-century/). China is[ slated](https://news.bjx.com.cn/html/20220126/1201679.shtml) to spend $440 billion between now and 2035 to build at least 150 more nuclear reactors. If China can continue to develop ADS technology, the waste from these plants can be put to good use and be recycled to produce even more energy for its growing needs.

Teledyne FLIR Defense announced today at Eurosatory the launch of its new MUVE™ B330 drone payload that can be used to detect deadly biological agents and other airborne biohazards.

The [MUVE B330](https://www.flir.co.uk/products/muve-b330/) is a continuous biological detector and collector, purpose-designed for unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and unmanned platforms to provide real-time monitoring of biological threats while on the move. The payload lets operators assess a potentially hazardous scene from a safe distance. When dangerous conditions exist or are expected, they can use the MUVE B330 to fly into suspect areas for an initial assessment of what biological agents may be present. The new sensor payload deploys in a matter of minutes, significantly reducing time to action. The Teledyne FLIR [SkyRanger® R70](https://www.flir.co.uk/products/skyranger-r70/) and [R80D SkyRaider](https://www.flir.co.uk/products/r80d-skyraider/)™ UAS aircraft will serve as initial deployment platforms for the B330.

The MUVE B330 allows operators to …

- Make quick assessments of the threat perimeter
- Trigger automated sample collection for follow-on identification
- Enable informed decision-making before human operators approach a hazardous scene
- Locate the threat source and track progression as the scene unfolds
- Cover difficult terrain from the air

The MUVE B330 biological detector complements the [FLIR MUVE™ C360](https://www.flir.co.uk/products/muve-c360/) multi-gas detector, which is deployable on both Teledyne FLIR as well as commercial UAS systems and robots. In April, the company announced it had teamed with Boston Dynamics, whose Spot® robot will carry the C360 to remotely monitor chemical threats in industrial and public safety applications.

PARIS, June 13, 2022 ― Teledyne FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY), announced today at Eurosatory the launch of its new Kobra™ 725 modular robot. The tracked multi-mission platform delivers new capabilities and technology upgrades to the Kobra 710 unmanned ground system, with the lift capacity and mobility customers demand for operations in the harshest conditions.

The Kobra 725 provides unmatched power and payload support in an easy-to-operate package. The robot’s advanced manipulator arm can lift heavy loads and stretches to a height of nearly four meters to access hard-to-reach places. At less than 250 kg, the rugged Kobra 725 is highly maneuverable, even in rough terrain, climbs stairs, and even surmounts jersey barriers. New technology includes full-HD cameras, wide angle visual/thermal mobility cameras, field-swappable radio modules, and AES-256 encryption.

Kobra 725’s features make it ideally suited for military applications such as Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD)/counter-vehicle-borne IED missions, remote CBRN detection, weapon integration, and reconnaissance, as well as other tough jobs from building safety and hazmat inspections to nuclear power maintenance.

In 2019, the U.S. Army selected the FLIR Kobra as its Common Robotic System-Heavy (CRS-H) robotic platform and approved a five-year production contract to build upwards of 350 unmanned ground vehicles. In November 2021, the Army announced it had begun fielding CRS-H robots.
