Scrolling through LinkedIn today i saw a post by Rick Edinger about a [TRANSCAER Augmented Reality App](https://www.transcaer.com/augmented-reality-app) that intrigued me. Now, I have no practical need for this app but of course I downloaded it to see what it was all about.

I am not a hazmat technician, but from the persepctive of someone who likes a good piece of tech' and an interesting app I found this pretty cool and spent a good 20 mins placing a tank car in the centre of CBRNe World HQ and zooming in and out, rotating the car, and investigating the various functions available in the app.

According to the website; TRANSCAER AR Training is an Augmented Reality (AR) application designed to create an interactive experience by combining the local real-world environment and computer-generated content within one interface on the device.

The AR Training application uses the camera on the user’s Apple mobile device to project an interactable 3D model into the local real-world environment. The specific model projected is dependent on the training scenario that was selected - currently there are four scenarios available in the AR Training application. The user will be able to view and interact with a virtual full-scale railcar and acquire skills in operation of specific components in a mixed digital and real-world environment that has traditionally only been possible while being in the presence of the physical railcar itself.

Police in Ukraine are investigating an explosion at a court house in Kyiv. It is currently believed that a man, who had been in custody for eight years on charges of throwing a grenade during a demonstration outside the country’s parliament, killing three members of the National Guard and hurting more than 140 others in 2015, was responsible for the explosion. He was at the court to attend a hearing and it is being speculated that when it did not go the way he wanted he set off the explosion killing himself and injuring two police officers.

It is unclear yet as to how he managed to get the explosives in the first instance, or how he got them in to the court.

Liberty Defense Holdings Ltd, a leading technology provider of AI-based next generation detection solutions for concealed weapons and threats, is pleased to announce it has received a purchase order for multiple HEXWAVE systems from Elkhart County, Indiana.

 Elkhart County will deploy the HEXWAVE walkthrough system for detection of concealed weapons and threats at multiple entrances to a new courthouse opening in 2024. The courthouse may use HEXWAVE in 2023 in its existing location to begin taking advantage of the system’s enhanced detection of metallic and non-metallic threats and more seamless visitor and employee screening. The HEXWAVE system does not require people to divest benign items like cell phones, keys, wallets, and steel toe boots, unlike traditional metal detectors in use.

 “The state of Indiana is issuing a mandate that facilities need to have a security plan in place by next year that includes the detection of a broader range of prohibited items,” said Bill Frain, CEO of Liberty Defense. “We are excited to be working with Elkhart County to provide enhanced security screening to the new courthouse. We are certainly seeing greater demand for HEXWAVE’s seamless people screening detection at courthouses and other critical infrastructure checkpoints.”

 Elkhart County receives approximately 1,200 people per day, and its security protocol currently includes full divesting before walking through a metal detector and placing bags on X-ray machines.

The Santa Clara County FireSafe Council (SCCFSC) announced it has entered into a partnership with N5 Sensors, Inc., to offer their N5SHIELD platform as part of SCCFSC’s product and services portfolio. This partnership enables the resale of N5SHIELD, a wildfire detection solution that provides real time detection of wildfire and air quality alerts via an end-to-end architecture that leverages cloud-connected multimodal sensors, and AI to make communities safer from wildfire and airborne environmental hazards.

Leveraging a network of ChemNode devices, each containing the most advanced sensors for gas, chemicals, particulates, heat and environmental conditions along with multiple communication options, the N5 ecosystem provides an interactive dashboard for visualizing sensor data and fire alerts. This real-time data enables first responders to identify wildfire faster and to analyze local conditions for safe and effective management of fire-fighting resources. The system also provides air quality information, further protecting community members.

According to Seth Schalet, CEO of Santa Clara County FireSafe Council “The nature of wildfires is evolving, coupled with population and structure growth in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) areas in Santa Clara County, increasing wildfire risk. Europe’s leading robotics and autonomous systems (RAS) developer Milrem Robotics’ unmanned ground system THeMIS equipped with the company’s intelligent functions kit MIFIK, excelled at comprehensive first-of-its-kind autonomy trials organized by the Estonian Military Academy.

Last week, under the leadership of the Estonian Military Academy and the supervision of defence and autonomy specialists from Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK comprehensive trials of autonomous ground robots took place.

For two days at the Estonian Defence Forces central training area Milrem Robotics’ intelligent ground system was put to the test throughout increasingly complex scenarios during which observers from the aforementioned countries evaluated the elements needed to autonomously navigate on the road, off-road and in a dense forest – route planning, point-to-point movement, and obstacle avoidance. The tests assessed the technological readiness of the UGV and human-machine cooperation.

The scenarios included driving on dirt roads, small forest roads, open fields with and without high vegetation and in the forest with moderate to severe density.

“During the two days, we showcased a really mature autonomous system that is capable of handling very complex environments, succeeding even in the densest forest. Autonomy is a crucial and integral part of unmanned ground systems, especially on the battlefield, since it frees up manpower for other tasks and allows soldiers to concentrate on fulfilling their mission rather than operating vehicles,” said Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics.

Väärsi emphasized that although Milrem’s intelligent functions can be hailed as a success based on the trials, autonomy development is a marathon, not a sprint and continuous improvements to reliability, features and the UI are being made by the company’s autonomy team and operatively delivered to customers via regular updates.

The autonomy trials were organized by the Estonian Military Academy in cooperation with other units of the Estonian Defence Forces and included 11 RAS developers from nine countries and visitors from nearly 20 countries. The event was partially funded by the Milrem Robotics’ led EDIDP integrated Modular Unmanned Ground System (IMUGS) project and included the project’s autonomy team as a participant.

A stockpile of obsolete chemical weapons stored at the U.S. Army Pueblo Chemical Depot (PCD) since the 1950s has been safely eliminated.

The final round of the stockpile was safely destroyed June 22, said Walton Levi, site project manager, Pueblo Chemical Agent-Destruction Pilot Plant.

Plant workers destroyed more than 780,000 mustard agent-filled projectiles and mortar rounds through [three munitions destruction campaigns](https://www.peoacwa.army.mil/2023/02/13/facts-chemical-munitions-in-pueblo/). A campaign refers to destruction of a particular type of chemical weapon. Destruction operations in Colorado began in March 2015, with more than 2,613 U.S. tons of chemical agent destroyed. One other chemical weapons stockpile site remains in Kentucky and is expected to finish destruction operations later this year.

The Colorado depot originally stored three kinds of mustard agent-filled weapons: 155mm and 105mm projectiles and 4.2-inch mortar rounds. Three different technologies were used to destroy the stockpile. The projectiles and a portion of the 4.2-inch mortar rounds [were destroyed](https://www.peoacwa.army.mil/2023/02/06/facts-neutralization-followed-by-biotreatment/) in the main plant under the supervision of trained operators using automated technology. The mustard agent was neutralized and the resulting product, known as [hydrolysate](https://www.peoacwa.army.mil/2023/02/13/facts-hydrolysate-overview/), was broken down into salt, water and organics using living microbes in a [biotreatment process.](https://www.peoacwa.army.mil/2023/02/06/facts-biotreatment-process/)

Projectiles deemed unsuitable for automated processing and the remaining mortar rounds were destroyed by [Static Detonation Chamber](https://www.peoacwa.army.mil/pcapp/pcapp-destruction-technologies/static-detonation-chamber/)s. Earlier, 951 problematic munitions were destroyed using an [Explosive Destruction System](https://www.peoacwa.army.mil/pcapp/pcapp-destruction-technologies/explosive-destruction-system/) between 2015 and 2018.

The accomplishment has been reported to the [Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons](https://www.opcw.org/), an intergovernmental organization that implements the [Chemical Weapons Convention](https://www.opcw.org/chemical-weapons-convention) treaty. The [Program Executive Office, Assembled Chemical Weapons Alternatives](https://www.peoacwa.army.mil/) is responsible for eliminating the U.S. chemical weapons stockpile by the treaty commitment date of Sept. 30, 2023.

Now that the entire stockpile in Colorado has been destroyed, PCAPP will close. The closure phase, which will continue for three to four years, encompasses the disposal of all secondary wastes, decontamination and decommissioning of facilities and equipment, disposition of property, demolition of certain facilities, and closure of government contracts and environmental permits in accordance with laws and regulations. During closure, the safety of the workforce, public and environment will remain the project’s top priority. PCD is on the Base Realignment and Closure list and is being transferred to a local reuse authority, [PuebloPlex.](https://www.puebloplex.com/)

The U.S. chemical weapons stockpile sites in Colorado and at the Blue Grass Army Depot in Kentucky accounted for the last 10% of what was originally a national stockpile of more than 30,000 tons of chemical weapons. The [U.S. Army Chemical Materials Activity](https://www.cma.army.mil/) (then designated an Agency) destroyed the initial 90%, which was stored at seven other sites across the U.S. and on Johnston Atoll in the Pacific. Chemical weapons destruction in Kentucky began in 2019 and is on target to meet the treaty commitment date.

SAR had claimed that casualties had been caused by a chemical fill mortar, but after the investigation the OPCW could find no evidence to substantiate these claims. More bad news for the SAR as pressure continued on them during the recent REVCON on their own offensive, treaty breaching, use of CW.

That a pandemic caused by a bat coronavirus started in the city with the world’s largest programme of research into bat coronaviruses was always intriguing. That among the first people to get ill with allegedly Covid-like symptoms in the month the pandemic began were three scientists working in that lab was highly suspicious. Now that we know their names, we find one of them was collecting what turned out to be the closest cousins of Sars-CoV-2 at the time, and another was doing the very experiments that could have created the virus. These revelations make it almost a slam dunk for the coronavirus lab-leak hypothesis.

On 10 June the author and free-speech campaigner Michael Shellenberger broke the news at his Substack site that the three sick scientists were Ben Hu, Yu Ping and Yan Zhu, as confirmed to him by multiple US intelligence sources frustrated by the Biden administration’s refusal to release this key fact. This week I was with him when the *Wall Street Journal* announced it had independently confirmed his story with its intelligence sources.

Who is Dr Hu? The Wuhan Institute of Virology has hundreds of scientists but there is one team, the Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases, with a focus on bat coronaviruses, headed by Shi Zhengli. Her right-hand man and star pupil is Ben Hu, who runs the lab experiments. Hu was lead author on the institute’s most remarkable achievement, published in 2017, that it had grown three bat viruses in the lab and then created eight new hybrid viruses with the spike genes from wild bat viruses spliced into the genetic backbone of one of these lab-grown viruses.

Yu Ping is a student who worked as one of the lab’s virus-hunters, collecting the bat viruses in caves all over southern China. His (or her – the name could be male or female in China) master’s thesis written in June 2019 was unearthed by the brilliant young Indian internet sleuth Jeet Ray, known for a long time only as ‘The Seeker’. It detailed 170 Sars-like viruses collected mostly from Yunnan province. Among them was a group of nine viruses that at the time the pandemic began were the nine closest relatives of the virus causing Covid but whose existence had been a closely guarded secret until November 2020. When Yu Ping’s thesis appeared as a paper, these viruses were omitted.

The third sick scientist, Yan Zhu, was the ‘senior experimentalist’ in the lab. She appears as a co-author on many of the lab’s virus papers including a May 2021 paper at last revealing the genomes of the nine viruses in Yu Ping’s thesis. So these guys are not some random members of the institute; they are at the coalface. As far as we know, all three are still alive.

Horseshoe bats in southern Yunnan, where this intensive virus-hunting happened, are almost certainly the wild reservoir of the pandemic’s closest cousins. A mineshaft in Mojiang County, a cave in Mengla County and a cave in Laos have all yielded bat viruses with 96 per cent or more genetic similarity to Sars-CoV-2. But none is a perfect match.

Southern Yunnan is a long way from Wuhan: about as far as London to Rome. That’s an implausibly long journey for an infected raccoon dog or bamboo rat to make to market, especially without causing an outbreak along the way. The one animal we know was making the journey regularly, and visiting bat caves, was *Homo scientificus*.

There is another name that may prove interesting. In an interview in 2017 Ben Hu thanked a scientist called Libiao Zhang for help collecting viruses in Yunnan. In 2019 Zhang announced the discovery of a species of horseshoe bat (*Rhinolophus malayanus*) new to the area, and it was in this species that the Mengla virus turned up with close resemblance to Sars-CoV-2.

Dr Zhang works not in Wuhan but in Guangdong at the very institute that announced in 2020 it had found traces of a similar virus in a smuggled pangolin, confiscated before the pandemic began in 2019. This led to brief excitement in early 2020 that pangolins might be the intermediate species that transmitted Covid to people. The lack of pangolins in the Wuhan market and the genetic distance of the ‘pangolin’ virus from Sars-CoV-2 soon scotched that theory.

But it remains an enigma: how did a pangolin in Guangdong pick up a bat virus from distant Yunnan? Yuri Deigin, a Russian-Canadian biotech expert, thinks the answer is staring us in the face. The same lab that sequenced the samples from pangolins in 2019 was also, we know, sequencing samples from Dr Zhang’s malayanus bats around the same time. Maybe the pangolin never had a coronavirus (it had much higher doses of sendai virus), but the sequencing machine was contaminated by malayanus bat samples. Such contamination occurs frequently in such machines and is difficult to prevent.

Dr Hu’s name appears on another key document: the notorious DEFUSE proposal. This was the 2018 grant application to the US Department of Defense, from Dr Peter Daszak of the US-based EcoHealth Alliance, which proposed putting furin cleavage sites (small genetic features that open up the spike protein in such a way that it makes the virus much more infectious) into newly discovered bat Sars-like coronaviruses to enable them to infect human cells and humanised mice. Sars-CoV-2 is the only Sars-like virus ever found with a furin cleavage site in it, a fact that led several western virologists to suspect a lab leak right at the start. Dr Shi had already created furin cleavage sites in other kinds of coronaviruses.

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening, today announces that they will manufacture and deliver up to 1,200 Lightweight Chemical Detectors (LCD) to the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport to replace the existing fleet of personal chemical detectors.

LCD is a rugged, reliable person worn Toxic Industrial Chemical (TIC) and chemical-warfare agent (CWA) identifier and detector. It is the most widely deployed personal chemical detector used by CBRNe and HAZMAT operators across the globe. The detector provides a lifesaving warning to personnel who deploy into high threat environments and warning of toxic threats to the civilian population.

Defence Market Director, Michael Lea, said, “We’re delighted to have been once again selected by the Swiss Federal Department of Defence to supply them with personal chemical detectors. FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY), recently delivered the 1,000th robot under its Man Transportable Robot System Increment II (MTRS Inc II) contract with the U.S Army and other services.

Produced at the FLIR Defense facility in Elkridge, Maryland, the MTRS Inc II ground robot (also known as [Centaur](https://www.flir.com/products/centaur/)®) is used by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams to disable improvised explosive devices, landmines, and unexploded ordnance and to perform similar dangerous tasks. Operators also can quickly attach different sensors and payloads to the robot to address other missions, including chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats.

The U.S. Army chose FLIR Defense (formerly Endeavor Robotics) in 2017 as the MTRS Inc. II system provider for a multi-year program of record. Since then, other military branches have procured the robot for their EOD units as a new or replacement unmanned ground system. Teledyne FLIR Defense has received orders for over 1,800 MTRS Inc. II robots from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps, totaling more than $250 million.

“We are honored that this versatile robot has become the most widely produced tactical unmanned ground vehicle used by America’s military since the Gulf Wars,” said Dr. JihFen Lei, executive vice president and general manager of FLIR Defense. “Our team in Elkridge and around the world is proud to build technology platforms like Centaur that our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines rely on to keep them from harm’s way during hazardous missions.”

The MTRS Inc II robot is a medium-sized UGV that provides a standoff capability to detect, confirm, identify, and dispose of hazards. Weighing roughly 160 pounds, the rugged robot features an advanced visual/thermal camera suite for day/night operation, a dexterous manipulator arm that reaches over six feet, and the ability to climb stairs. Modular payloads can be used for CBRN detection and other operations.

Kromek Group plc is pleased to announce that it has secured a contract worth $1.5m in the civil nuclear market, which is to be delivered over the next 15 months. The contract has been awarded by one of the Group’s distribution partners in Asia and is to supply three new end customers in the region. Importantly, the order is for a new product, based on the Group’s existing technology, with the development of the product having been funded by the distribution partner. The product is designed for civil nuclear applications, including the detection, identification and analysis of radiological sources.

With global demand for its industry-leading connected safety wearables at an all-time high, [Blackline Safety](https://www.blacklinesafety.com/%5Ch) Corp. (TSX: BLN) has announced that it has expanded its manufacturing capacity at its Calgary, AB headquarters. The expansion – which is poised to increase Blackline’s production capacity by 30 to 50% – was achieved by repurposing the company’s existing space.

 The announcement comes on the heels of a milestone year which saw the company’s global customer base climb to 1,800, with 150,000 workers protected by the company’s game-changing safety wearables across North America, Europe, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

 Over the last year, global demand for Blackline’s real-time connected safety technology grew an average of 30%, while product rentals rose 214% and the company’s cartridge line saw 165% growth.

 “Amid the rising demand for our products, the expansion enables us to assemble increased volumes of products onsite and maintain Blackline’s industry-best lead times for order fulfillment,” said Kevin Meyers, Blackline Safety COO. “Our customers depend on Blackline to keep their workers safe, and we are committed to ensuring product availability and reliability to meet the needs of our growing user base as we transform the industrial workplace through state-of-the-art technology.”

 Blackline’s expanded manufacturing area now spans more than 11,850 square feet on the main floor of its headquarters – a 49% increase in space. The repurposing was made possible due to space being freed up as a result of more employees choosing a hybrid work model, and by moving the company’s development facilities to the building’s second floor.

 Blackline’s breakthrough technology is cloud-based, featuring GPS-enabled safety sensors and devices that leverage the Internet of Things (IoT) to connect workers to live monitoring. The platform includes high-performance emergency response and evacuation management capabilities as well as contract tracing. It connects employees with software that pinpoints their location, enables back-and-forth information sharing and collects vital data, making it possible to detect the exact location of a gas leak or determine how often workers are travelling through high-risk areas. The company’s wearables are offered in two robust models — one connected via a cellular network and another via satellite.
