[Smiths Detection](https://www.smithsdetection.com/) today announces that the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has selected Smiths Detection to supply 122 portable Aerosol and Vapor Chemical Agent Detectors (AVCAD). This follows the successful development and testing of a next generation field based AVCAD system by Smiths Detection after an award in 2018.

The systems, which have been developed in collaboration with 908 Devices, are a chemical detector designed to detect, identify, alarm and report the presence of traditional and advanced chemical threat vapors and aerosols. Using a wireless remote alarm capability, the AVCAD, which can be mounted or portable, will support missions for the U.S. Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps. The systems rely on Smiths Detection’s expertise in packaging leading commercial technology to meet specific military requirements.

As part of the AVCAD scope, the award will include 5 fixed systems for ships (including detectors, control display units, and remote display units) and 8 kits for mounting detectors on vehicles. This award continues a Smiths Detection legacy of providing the US Department of Defense with chemical detection solutions and follows the successful deployment of tens of thousands of detectors over the three decades.

In a milestone for defense cooperation between the Czech Republic and Vietnam, the Vietnam People’s Navy and Army have received a state-of-the-art decon vehicle from Czech defense company Excalibur Army.

The Excalibur Army Decon vehicle is specifically intended for the Chemical Corps of the Vietnam People’s Army and is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing Vietnam’s chemical and biological defense capabilities. This highly advanced vehicle is designed to perform comprehensive decontamination tasks, encompassing vehicles, personnel, armament, gear, oversized equipment, terrain, aircraft, buildings, and various objects, thanks to its high-reach operator platform.

The vehicle is transportable by aircraft and boasts exceptional mobility on a modern TATRA FORCE military chassis with a 4×4 configuration. This versatility is achieved through both manual and automated decontamination methods, facilitated by a spraying bar attachable to the platform or via a decontamination frame.This chassis is built on the unique TATRA Concept, featuring a central backbone tube and swinging half-axles, ensuring outstanding off-road mobility and consistent payload capacity regardless of operating conditions. The vehicle’s air suspension system allows for dynamic adjustments to the vehicle’s clearance, with the driver capable of raising it by 70 mm or lowering it by 100 mm on the go. Optionally, the DECON vehicle can be configured as a 6×6, providing higher tank capacity, improved performance, and an extended reach of the platform. Customers can also opt for an armored cabin for additional protection

Smiths Detection, a global leader in threat detection and security screening technologies, today announces that it has achieved the 1,000th sale of its HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanner.

The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX produces high-resolution volumetric 3D images for quicker and deeper baggage assessment and automatic explosive detection with low false-alarm rates. This provides an advanced security screening experience that allows passengers to leave electronic devices and liquids in their hand luggage, enabling passengers to move through airport security checkpoints faster, without compromising on safety. The state-of-the-art security scanner ultimately leads to greater safety outcomes, more efficient operations and improved passenger satisfaction.

Already in use in airports around the world, the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX has been shown to reduce time spent at security by up to 50%, with 90% of passengers at Milan Linate Airport passing through security in fewer than five minutes[\[1\]](#_ftn1).

The system has ECAC EDS CB C3 approval and featured on the Transport Security Administration's (‘TSA’) CPSS QPL &amp; APL for base, medium and large configuration checkpoint CT checkpoint screening systems. The CTiX scanner is also STAC, ENAC and IPMO approved, and has TSA APSS v6.2 Level 1 certification.

Earlier this year, Smiths Detection announced the launch of the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX Model S, which offers the same high-standards with a smaller footprint. This system has already achieved ECAC EDS CB C3 certification in Europe, with further local approvals to follow.

It was reported over the weekend that a one year old had died, and three other children were hospitalised after apparently ingesting fentanyl at their nursery in the Bronx, New York.

Nursery staff called 911 to report multiple children were unwell. The cause of the death and illness is yet to be officially confirmed, but a police source told The New York Post the children had eaten something, and then gone to sleep for a nap at around 1 pm. They didn't wake up at 2:30 pm, so Narcan was administered. Another source told the post that nearly one kilogram of fentanyl was found at the nursery, sources told the paper.

The nursery is classified by the state as a "group family day care," meaning it is a daycare operated out of a home.

On September 11, India's National Disaster Response Force announced they had provided CBRN coverage to all venues involved during the G20 Summit.

In total, the NRDF says they deployed 600 members in eleven teams equipped with the latest CBRN equipment. In addition to this they stationed 4 hazmat vehicles, epuipped with chemical and radiation detecton devices, at strategic locations around the event.

In a statement they said "In the lead up to the event, the NRDF, in cordination with the NDMA and other stakeholders including DAE and DRDO, conducted various sensitisation training programmes for the rescuers, Dehli policem NSG, medical officers, ambulance staff from hospitals, security officials, event managers, and hotel staff to brief the, on likely threat scenarios and their roles as first responders."

This training culminated in a tabletop, and mock, exercises at different veunes involving all stakeholders.

Teledyne FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, is showcasing a new technology concept at this week’s DSEI conference in London that wil lallow crews to autonomously launch small drones operated from inside a military vehicle; perform reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition (RSTA); and then recover the aircraft without ever having to leave the safety of the vehicle.

The Black Recon™ Vehicle Reconnaissance System (VRS) is a development program that features an entirely new micro-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) designed to withstand the rigors of traveling on infantry and other fighting vehicles. The system is built to provide continuous untethered reconnaissance at flight speeds that allow the UAV to work ahead of advancing vehicles, supplying valuable situational awareness even beyond line of sight.

With its thermal and visual payload, Black Recon sends live imagery and targeting information back to vehicle crews. Operators can use the system for a wide range of missions, such as assessing if terrain is passable, sweeping for mines and improvised explosive devices, or performing close-up inspection under bridges using onboard illumination. The system delivers high precision RSTA and can perform GPS-denied operations.

Fitted inside a hardened launch box mounted to a vehicle, Black Recon’s deployment system can launch up to three UAVs during a mission. When one returns, a unique cradle-arm autonomously recovers the drone using patented technology to precisely track, capture, and dock the UAV – day or night, even in poor weather. Drones are then automatically recharged for the next mission.

“Black Recon represents a groundbreaking new capability and a force multiplier for warfighters to take on near-peer adversaries,” said Dr. JihFen Lei, executive vice president and general manager of Teledyne FLIR Defense. “The ability to launch and recover UAVs in seconds from a vehicle, without exposing the crew, will enable fighting units to maintain operational tempo and leverage the system when it’s needed most – in dynamic, uncertain and complex environments.

“We continue to refine Black Recon’s technology and are excited about future applications, not only for the military but also other areas like law enforcement, border security, and critical infrastructure protection. Avon Protection’s ST54 enhanced multi-mission Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) has received certification to the NFPA 1986 Standard on Respiratory Protection Equipment for Tactical and Technical Operations, including NIOSH CBRN certification.

 The updated NFPA 1986:2023 standard specifies minimum requirements for the design, performance, testing and certification of SCBAs with emphasis on performance requirements, cold temperature operations, and improved testing methods.

 Avon Protection’s ST54 Tactical Operator SCBA system has been developed for tactical operations where the user needs to respond to changing operational conditions. The ST54 is the base to a multi-mission respiratory protection system that provides operational flexibility to operators and mission commanders in the field for a tailored PPE response based on available intelligence.

 The system provides users with a comfortable, customizable high-performance system with flame hardening, breathing performance, rough handling and passive speech in a package that is easily integrated into tactical kit profiles.

 Recent improvements to the system include upgraded breathing performance (3.4L per breath at 103 litres per minute) with reduced exhalation resistance and the addition of a new clear outsert providing higher abrasion resistance.

 Wearer comfort and agility in the field are maximised via the system’s ergonomic clam shell back-frame with enhanced stability and weight distribution, a new ‘drag handle’ for emergency extraction and cobra buckles for Quick Drop capability.

 Pneumatic improvements include an Over Pressure Protection Device (OPPD) that protects the system from over-charging or damage, even if connected to higher pressure charging sources, and an optional remote lightning fill. Remote Dual Trans-fill located on the user’s right side of the waist belt provides a connection to rapidly trans-fill between two SCBAs (in both directions).

Sponsored by St. Justine's Hospital in Montreal this is an observation study measuring medical response in contaminated environment.

This is an ongoing multicentric observational study that aims to assess the medical response to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive (cbrne) events during the last five (5) decades (i.e.: 1970-2020), and in any future cbrne attack that might occur within the next 15 years (i.e.: 2021-2036).

##### CBRN Monitoring Capabilities Implemented to Catamaran Fire Boat Built by Lungteh Shipyard in Taiwan

A successful example of cooperation between Bertin Environics and a renown shipyard.

Big city harbours and other coastal areas experience an ever increasing amount of sea traffic. In addition to human transportation by ferries, the amount of transportation of goods and bulk material is constantly growing. The risk of accidents, or even intentional incidents, in these busy areas is higher than in open seas.

When this happens, fire and rescue services are the first actors on scene, and they are responsible for handling the dangerous situations. The risk of and incident involving hazardous chemicals, biological agents or radioactive materials is normally low, but if anything related to these so called CBRN materials is involved, the seriousness of the situation grows drastically.

##### Fire Boat 7 from Hong Kong Fire Services

Bertin Environics supplied to the [Hong Kong Fire Services](https://www.hkfsd.gov.hk/eng/gallery/fireboat/no7.html) a CBRN detection system to Fireboat 7 built by [Lungteh Shipyard](https://www.lungteh.com/LungTeh/en/project/147/) in Taiwan. The comprehensive CBRN system complies with the [Classification Society requirements](https://environics.fi/blog/classification-society-role-in-naval-cbrn-monitoring/) and covers chemical, biological and radiation detection. In addition to standard CBRN monitoring, the system also covers flammable gas detection and air quality monitoring in the protected areas inside the vessel. The project was established in good cooperation with Lungteh shipyard despite some challenges during the process.
The first big obstacle was the bridge collapse near the shipyard delaying the vessel testing and consequent delivery, since it prevented the ship from leaving the shipyard area.
After the vessel was delivered to Hong Kong, the next challenge was the Covid -19 epidemic outbreak, which caused a long lockdown period in Hong Kong area, preventing the travelling of our staff and thus delaying the final testing of the system and the crew training.

However, despite all hindrances during the project, the CBRN monitoring system is currently finalized and in active use to protect Hong Kong area marine traffic and Hong Kong citizens.

Blackline Safety Corp.has announced they secured new deals in the previous six months totaling more than $1.3 million with three of the world’s leading energy companies in Oman, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE).

 The oil and gas giants are purchasing a combined 1,200 G7c and 200 G7x portable gas detectors, 50 G7 EXO area gas monitors and 40 G7 Bridges to protect their workers at various sites across the Middle East. Several deliveries have already been completed, with the balance of the hardware and service revenue to be realized over the next year.

 Blackline’s all-in-one solution for lone worker and gas detection improves frontline worker safety and optimizes operations by providing access to real-time information—making the company uniquely positioned to seize the global connected worker market with a compound annual growth rate of 20 percent.

 “These deals are completely new connected gas detection contracts. We didn’t go in and replace competitors’ products. Customers are asking for connected safety in the field and remote locations, and Blackline Safety is the only provider that can fulfill this need with real-time visibility into what workers are experiencing on the job,” said Peter Attalla, Vice President, International Sales.

 “Blackline has worked with our customers over the last two years to prove our technology in the region—and the feedback continues to be very positive. The reliability of our devices coupled with our real-time capabilities and our reporting suite, Blackline Analytics, set us apart. We started with piloting our lone worker solution, and now they are purchasing our full suite of gas detection products,” added Attalla.

 This is the second time this year the company has announced major deals in the Middle East.  Blackline’s growth in the Middle East isn’t limited to equipment purchases. The company has also seen their rental business accelerate, with high demand for G7c and G7 EXO devices in Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Poland's counterintelligence agency ABW is investigating whether an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease is due to deliberate contamination of city of Rzeszów's water supply.

Since mid-August, Rzeszów has been at the center of a Legionnaires’ outbreak with 11 deaths and 144 cases to date. Due to the outbreak further investigation ensued and Legionella bacteria was detected in the city's water supply. Rzeszów is Poland’s main logistics hub for sending military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and a base for U.S. troops.
