Scientists and engineers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) have developed what they are calling a “brain-on-a-chip” device aimed at testing and predicting the effects of biological and chemical agents, disease, or pharmaceutical drugs on the brain over time without the need for human or animal subjects.

The device, part of the Lab’s iCHIP (in-vitro Chip-Based Human Investigational Platform) project, simulates the central nervous system by recording neural activity from multiple brain cell types deposited and grown onto microelectrode arrays. The platform, described in the journal PLOS One, could help scientists understand how brain cells connect and interact, combat brain disorders, determine how soldiers are affected by exposure to chemical and biological weapons and develop antidotes to counteract those effects.

Chemists at Saratov State University have created what they say is a membrane solution capable of protecting military personnel from chemical and biological weapons while remaining air and vapor permeable. Leonid Kossovich, the university’s president, said in a statement \\"In cooperation with industrial partners, experimental suits have been made for Defense Ministry and Interior Ministry personnel to wear during a test period. When the testing is over, the possibility of batch production may be considered,\\"

The testing of suits made with the special membrane fabric is to be completed by the end of this year and the material’s certification will follow shortly afterwards.

A Louisiana soldier was indicted Monday for manufacturing and detonating a “highly toxic” chemical weapon, federal authorities said.

Ryan Keith Taylor, 24, allegedly used the weapon, which emitted chlorine gas, on April 12 in the Kisatchie National Forest east of Fort Polk, where he was stationed, the indictment says. After Taylor detonated the weapon, responding emergency personnel suffered chemical exposure and were treated at the Fort Polk hospital, the Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. During a search of Taylor’s home, state authorities evacuated his apartment complex and found “suspicious devices and ordnance,” including an improvised explosive that was deactivated by a hazardous materials team, the statement said.Taylor faces a maximum sentence of life in prison, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Louisiana said in a news release.

## [Obituary - Virginia Morlock](https://cbrneworld.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=243:obituary-virginia-morlock&catid=12)

Written by Gwyn Winfield on 18 December 2017.

It is with great sadness that we heard last week about the passing of Virginia Morlock, Manager in the Mission Systems Strategy division at Northrop Grumman headquarters and so much more. I first became aware of Virginia in approximately 2008 when she attended our first CBRNe Convergence in Bucharest. I was surprised by her insight and freedom with useful advice, something that she continued during the years that I knew her. As is often the case you need to wait until someone has passed to find out how common this was, and she was mentor and friend to a great deal of people and businesses that will all miss her bitterly. Farewell Virginia from the whole Falcon Team. Official obit can be read by clicking on the link above.
