Avon Protection, has been awarded three contracts by the DoD’s ASPIRE HMI (Advanced System for Protection and Integrated Reduction of Encumbrances Hood/Mask Interface) program, which is executed by JPEO-CBRND. The three contracts will cover the design and development of a solution to optimize integration between currently fielded M50 and M53A1 CBRN protective masks and CBRN protective garment hoods on a CBRN suit.

“The risk a customer faces when procuring protective equipment as individual systems from different suppliers is that there are potential integration issues at the points at which these different systems meet, no matter how advanced each individual system is,” Steve Elwell, President, Avon Protection, said. “Our approach is to mitigate this risk by designing our equipment to integrate seamlessly together, and it is this understanding of the importance of interface optimization between systems that we will bring to our work on this contract.”

The DoD is a strategic partner for Avon Protection, with millions of Avon Protection M50/M51 and M53/M53A1 air purifying respirators (APRs) in use across all branches of the US military.

Seven hazardous material response teams from Tennessee, Oklahoma and New Mexico competed in carefully designed emergency scenarios at the 28th annual HAZMAT Challenge at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Created by the Lab’s Emergency Management Division, teams compete to build skills and camaraderie, share knowledge and take home top honors.

Each team of five participating this year represented agencies from the Santa Fe Fire Department, Clovis Fire Department, Edmond Fire Department from Oklahoma, two teams from Los Alamos Fire Department, Laboratory HAZMAT, and Y-12 Fire Department from Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

The challenge involved teams responding to simulated disasters including:

- Clandestine drug lab with explosives
- Overturned tractor-trailer that requiring flammable fuel to be pumped out
- Biological lab accident
- Tractor-trailer accident at a gas station
- Anthrax incident at a hotel
- Prom bus involving a toxic industrial chemical
- Motor vehicle accident involving radiological sources

Each scenario was evaluated and graded by neutral experts in the field. Following each exercise the team was debriefed and discuss the aspects of the response and points are awarded.

This year the top three finishers in the technical challenge went to:

- 1st place the Los Alamos National Laboratory HAZMAT team
- 2nd place Clovis Fire Department
- 3rd place Edmond, Oklahoma Fire Department

The obstacle course winner was Los Alamos Fire Department #2.

The host team, the Laboratory’s Emergency Response, gained a wealth of knowledge from the scenarios and networking with other Hazmat Teams from around the nation.

“The challenge we face each year is to develop new scenarios, so work on next year’s event starts immediately following this year’s event,” said HAZMAT Challenge organizer Christopher Barondeau.

Emergency response teams worldwide use different tools and personal protective equipment including mobile gas detectors to warn the rescuers from dangerous gas concentrations.

Dräger mobile gas detectors are produced for a wide range of industries, including the Fire Service, Mining/ Mine Rescue and Industry. Rescue teams in those industries have a growing demand for realistic training including portable gas detection.

To satisfy this rising demand for safe, repeatable and effective training, Dräger and Argon have cooperated to create the X-am 2x00/ 5x00 series Multi Gas training simulator which looks, feels, acts and alarms like real portable multi gas detectors Dräger X-am 2500, 2800, 5000, 5600 or 5800 to deliver a safe, realistic training experience for users of Dräger portable gas detectors.

Users can configure settings, like alarm limits, and select simulated sensors/gases to represent their operational X-am 2x00 or 5x00 series detector.

Gas sources can be simulated in different ways, including Argon’s Ultra Sonic beacons which are compatible with their Chemical Warfare simulators for those more advanced multi detector exercises.

Teledyne FLIR Defense has been awarded two contracts worth a total of as much as US$47 million to support a range of the company’s UGVs across the US Department of Defence (DoD) and other US government agencies.

The first contract is for the US DoD and is valued at up to $32 million. It will support sustainment of the Man-Transportable Robotic System (MTRS) and Common Robotic Systems-Heavy (CRS-H) UGVs.

The second contract is valued at up to $15 million and will cover a range of US government agencies, as well as meeting requirements for Foreign Military Sales and customer requirements for platforms, training or parts. Platforms included in the contract include FLIR Defense [FirstLook](https://plus.shephardmedia.com/detail/firstlook/?_gl=1*1xdiwt5*_gcl_au*NjMwMTU5ODYzLjE3MjIyNDUzMzc.) 110 and SUGV 310 small UGVs, [PackBot](https://plus.shephardmedia.com/detail/510-packbot/?_gl=1*13ihmpw*_gcl_au*NjMwMTU5ODYzLjE3MjIyNDUzMzc.) medium UGV and [Kobra](https://plus.shephardmedia.com/detail/710-kobra/?_gl=1*x5npmj*_gcl_au*NjMwMTU5ODYzLjE3MjIyNDUzMzc.) 725 large UGVs.

The two contracts span nearly the full portfolio of FLIR Defense’s UGVs from the 3kg throwable FirstLook to the man-portable PackBot up to the 260kg Kobra/CRS-H robot which is used for remote CBRN detection, larger ordnance disposal and other heavy-duty tasks.

Funding for the contracts will be provided with each delivery order received and both contracts feature a five-year performance period, with three base years and two option years.

Landscape and population considerations make it challenging to evaluate the potential impact of any incident and determine the best course of action. As the name suggests, UrbanAware is optimised for these complex urban environments where the topography of streets and buildings influences dispersion of airborne hazards. Typical use cases range from planning evacuation routes in a civil emergency to establishing optimal cordon areas based on predictive hazard modelling.

Underpinning Riskaware’s CBRN system is the Hazard Assessment Simulation and Prediction (HASP) Suite, which was developed over two decades by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and is licensed to Riskaware by Ploughshare. The HASP Suite was originally developed to provide rapid hazard prediction in complex urban environments in a matter of minutes, greatly improving upon previous models. It also takes into consideration the interactions between indoor and outdoor dispersion and is able to estimate source parameters, such as location, discharge time, and the amount of substance released. Integrating these robust capabilities with Smith Detection’s well established chemical sensor gives defence and security organisations a rich hazard modelling solution which surpasses any traditional options.

Kromek, a leading developer of radiation and bio-detection technology solutions for the advanced imaging and CBRN detection segments, is pleased to announce that it has been selected as a supplier under the UK Government’s Radiological Nuclear Detection Framework (the “Framework”) for the procurement of radiological nuclear (“RN”) detection equipment and supporting services for the Home Office.

The Framework was established to co-ordinate the RN detection procurement requirements and capabilities of the Home Office, Counter Terrorism Police and other public bodies to support Home Office strategic aims and to deliver enhancements to the UK’s end-to-end system for domestic nuclear security. Kromek applied for three of the four Framework categories, covering the supply of handheld, wearable and large volume static radiation detectors, and was successfully approved and awarded a Framework contract. Accordingly, Kromek is pre-qualified to be selected for orders in these categories, which over the four-year term of the Framework have a combined maximum procurement value of £84 million. The Group will provide further updates as and when there is progress in respect of any contracts within these three Framework categories.

 Exail, a French supplier of unmanned demining solutions, has signed a contract to deliver eight Caméléon LG unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) to the Belgium Armed Forces.

The demining robots have been designed to offer manoeuvrability and stability in severe environments, with the contract signed with Belgian Combat Engineer platoons and the Engineering School, according to Exail.

The lightweight and compact Caméléon LG UGV can be deployed quickly and features remote operation and real-time hazard detection.

As noted by *Shephard Defence Insight*, the Caméléon family includes the [Caméléon C](https://plus.shephardmedia.com/detail/cameleon/) designed for use by military, police, fire services and other first responders on various CBRN missions, while the [Caméléon LG-E](https://plus.shephardmedia.com/detail/cameleon-6c9f0a69-44cd-4c76-b55f-9df4b4446c20-301d16e8-8dce-4673-9800-cb5ad627175b/) is a mini-UGV dedicated to IED disposal and EOD missions.

The agreement will extend a 10-year partnership between Exail and the Belgian Combat Engineers.

Earlier this month, [Exail was selected by Naval Group](https://www.shephardmedia.com/news/naval-warfare/exail-selected-to-enhance-navigation-capabilities-of-the-french-navys-opv/) to provide its Phins Inertial Navigation Systems and Netans Data Distribution Units to French OPVs. Battelle and subcontractor CMC Pharmaceuticals announced today their selection by the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) to develop an improved nerve agent countermeasure to enhance the current standard of care for the warfighter and increase survivability. The contract, awarded through the Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense’s (JPEO-CBRND) Joint Project Manager for Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Medical (JPM CBRN Medical), funds the development of the medical countermeasure through FDA approval and is valued at over $53 million over 6.5 years.

“Battelle has a long history of working with the DOD on protecting military troops from chemical threats,” said Drew Cawthon (Business Line Director). “We’re proud to continue this important work and to develop next-generation solutions with a strong partner like CMC Pharmaceuticals.”

Teaming with Battelle as a subcontractor on the program is CMC Pharmaceuticals, an Ohio-based company that will provide the laboratory development, current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) testing, and Contract Manufacturing Organization (CMO) oversight required for all product development activities through U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval.

“Our expertise and vast breadth of knowledge in drug product development and manufacturing is a crucial component of this important program,” said Mike Radomsky, President of CMC Pharmaceuticals. “We are excited to begin work with Battelle and the DOD on this program and are honored that our team will help deliver an improved therapeutic to our troops against the threat of nerve agents.”

The program aims to develop the Reactivating Nerve Agent Treatment System (RNATS), an improved reactivator in a vial, intended for use by the U.S. military and allies to counteract chemical threats, specifically nerve agents. Reactivator compounds counteract the effects of nerve agents by ‘reactivating’ the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme.

Kromek, a leading developer of radiation and bio-detection technology solutions for the advanced imaging and CBRN detection segments, is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a contract worth £2.0m by the UK Ministry of Defence (“MOD”) for the supply of nuclear radiation detectors and ancillary products. The contract is to be delivered in the Group’s current financial year ending 30 April 2025.

The contract, which was awarded after a competitive tender process, is for the supply of the Group’s D5 RIID, a handheld, highly-sensitive gamma and neutron detector, along with the Group’s Alpha Beta probe attachment and other associated products. Launched in November 2023, the Alpha Beta probe connects directly to the D5 RIID to enable alpha and beta radiation to be detected, allowing the single, small form factor upgraded device to detect all types of radioactive material.

**Arnab Basu, CEO of Kromek, said:** “We are delighted to have won this important contract from the UK MOD, which is a significant strategic customer for Kromek. That it was awarded after a rigorous tender process provides excellent endorsement of the strength of our solution. It is also great validation to receive this key order for our Alpha Beta probe so soon after its launch at the end of last year. With the Alpha Beta probe upgrade, our D5 RIID is one of the most versatile handheld radiation detectors available today.
