Colonel Brian Howard, Cdr 29 Engineer  

Col Howard commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and commanded a Pioneer troop, deploying to the Former Republic of Yugoslavia he gained a GOC Commendation. Trained as an Ammunition Technical Officer, he then commanded an EOD troop, passed the High Threat IEDD Operator course, and deployed to Northern Ireland as ATO Armagh. He then commanded a Weapon Intelligence Section before becoming the Operations Officer for the Northern Ireland Combat Service Support Regiment.

Promoting to Maj in 2004, he served as SO2 Plans for Director Supply Chain Support, before he gained Command of 321 EOD Squadron in Northern Ireland. He deployed to Afghanistan as the HQ Regional Command South C-IED Branch 2IC, then to HQ Land Forces as SO2 Combat Service Support working on the drawdown in Iraq. In 2009 he deployed as the Operations Officer in the 4* HQ ISAF C-IED Branch, where he was awarded the Bronze Star by the United States. As SO2 G3 for 29 EOD & Search Gp he generated the Afghanistan C-IED Task Force and managed UK Military Aid to the Civil Power support. He became an EOD Tactical Commander for the OLYMPICS, then as 11 EOD Regiment Second-in-Command, supported the NATO Summit.

Attending the Advanced Command and Staff Course he gained a master’s degree from Kings College London before becoming the SO1 Operations for the 3* Standing Joint Command (UK). He was privileged to be given command of 11 EOD Regiment, providing tactical command of Joint Defence assets in response to the Salisbury Nerve Agent attack. The Regiment was awarded with the Firmin Sword of Peace and he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. Posted to the 3rd (UK) Division as SO1 Combat Service Support, he promoted to Colonel in the post of Deputy Commander 101 Logistic Brigade and Commander Logistic Support, 3 (UK) Division. In Dec 2021 he became Commander 29 EOD & Search Group, and recently a secondary role as Specialisation lead for the Military Engineer CBRNE profession.
